First, you need to know what Search Engine Optimization is to know how to best apply it to your website content.

Search Engine optimization is the skill of implementing specific keywords and strategically placing them within web content so that the search engine spiders pick them up.  Hence, placing your website higher than your competition. The key to this whole process is more about the clarity of which your content is written (relative to what you are trying to portray on your site); along with using appropriate keywords to reach your target.

The keywords you choose must clearly indicate to the search engines what is relevant about the subject matter vs. the message to your audience. To put it in layman’s terms - Content, Content, Content.  Google loves content, therefore the more information you can post with the right targeted keywords, the higher your site will shoot up the web rankings.

There are tools that the everyday person can use to help target the right keywords. For example, you can set up a ‘keyword cloud’. The keyword cloud will help you identify which words and phrases must be used, including those we call “gems”. These so-called gems are keywords that search engines have picked up a certain amount of times, multiplied by the amount of completion for that word. Therefore, if you find a word that has strong relevance to your site – along with very little competition for that word or phrase – then you have discovered a winning word to use in your content.  Since people are regularly searching for that word with very little competition, then your ‘gem’ word or phrase may lure them in to find your website!
